Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Louisville | (+4) A lot of the "top" teams have struggled. With three wins of 23+ and a 13-point road win over Miami, Louisville has been the best team. |
| Gonzaga | (+4) Good god, Gonzaga. Not only do the Zags obliterate mid-majors, they obliterate power conference teams too. 79-49 win at Texas A&M. |
| Virginia | (+1) Through three games, Virginia has allowed 110 total points. What else did you expect? Very much looking forward to UVA vs. Vermont. |
| Duke | (-2) A bit of a scare from Georgia State drops Duke a few spots, but nothing substantial. They've still got that win over Kansas, after all. |
| North Carolina | (-2) Exact same as Duke. Slight scare from Gardner-Webb but got it done in the end. Just doesn't have the same "quality win" as Duke yet. |
| Ohio State | (+4) Wow. Don't think anyone expected a 21-point win over Villanova, but that's what happened. Early December match vs. UNC will be huge. |
| Texas Tech | (0) Took care of business last week with a big win over Houston Baptist. No movement for the Red Raiders. Circle Dec. 12 vs. Louisville. |
| Michigan State | (+3) In the battle of one-loss contenders, MSU jumps Kansas thanks to a big road win at Seton Hall. Cassius Winston averaging 20 per game. |
| Kansas | (0) Just like Texas Tech: Took care of business, no movement. A win over Duke would probably have put Kansas at No. 1. Basketball is cruel. |
| Arizona | (+3) You could argue that Arizona should be higher. I wouldn't fight it. Résumé includes massive wins over Illinois and New Mexico State. |
| Oregon | (+3) Huge win for the Ducks on Tuesday over a Memphis team WITH James Wiseman. The top two of the Pac-12 might already be set in stone. |
| Texas | (0) Had a bit more trouble with Prairie View than one would like to see, but the Longhorns still have a win at Purdue on their 4-0 résumé. |
| Maryland | (+2) The Terps are doing a lot of good to make people forget about an early struggle with Holy Cross. That includes a sizable win over URI. |
| VCU | (+11) Our first massive jump of the week belongs to VCU. Got a great home win over LSU then backed it up by stomping Jacksonville State. |
| Kentucky | (-14) How do you lose at home to Evansville? The only reason that Kentucky didn't fall even further is the Michigan State win. Lucky for UK. |
| Tennessee | (NEW) Statement win over Washington. Dominated the Huskies for a full 40 minutes on a neutral court. The Vols jump from unranked to No. 16. |
| Xavier | (+3) Close wins over a solid Missouri team and a better-than-you-think Missouri State team. Decent jump thanks to teams above them losing. |
| Seton Hall | (NEW) I was too quick to write off Seton Hall. Played a hell of a game against MSU and slapped Saint Louis. Rare jump for a team that lost. |
| Butler | (NEW) I like what Butler's doing a lot. Four players averaging 11 points per game through four games. Big East is playing with power. |
| Utah State | (+3) Rebounding nicely from a poor outing against Montana State to start the year. They put up 81 with Sam Merrill having an off night. |
| Wisconsin | (NEW) A 16-point home win over Marquette launches the Badgers into my top 25. If only they had beaten Saint Mary's earlier this year... |
| Marquette | (-6) Pretty ugly road loss to Wisconsin, but let's not forget that giant comeback win over Purdue earlier this week. A decent drop is fair. |
| Colorado | (NEW) Good start for the Buffs. They've got some catching up to do to reach Arizona and Oregon, but McKinley Wright can make it happen. |
| Baylor | (-2) These rankings are obviously very dependent on how other teams perform. Baylor won this week, but other teams were more impressive. |
| Evansville | (NEW) Eh, why not? A win at Rupp might be the best win any team has this season. Next 5: Oklahoma, Villanova, Auburn, DePaul, Washington |
