Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Duke | (+3) All the teams at the top are very, very close right now. I'll go with the team that has the best résumé right now at No. 1: Duke. |
| Louisville | (-1) A scare from USC Upstate drops the Cardinals from No. 1. It's only a one spot drop though. Still one of the best in the country. |
| Virginia | (0) Nice wins over Vermont and Arizona State. The latter included overcoming a nine-point deficit in the second half. Nice work, Cavaliers. |
| Gonzaga | (-2) Like Louisville, a small drop after being tested by UT Arlington. As a mid-major, the Zags (unfortunately) receive more scrutiny. |
| Ohio State | (+1) I'm not sure any team has handled its schedule so far as well as Ohio State has. I seriously debated putting the Buckeyes higher. |
| North Carolina | (-1) If Louisville and Gonzaga fall after scares, it's only fair that UNC does the same after Elon took a halftime lead on the Tar Heels. |
| Texas Tech | (0) Got off to a bit of a slow start against LIU but never really seemed to be in danger, especially in the second half. TTU stays put. |
| Michigan State | (0) Still the highest one-loss team after taking care of business last week against Charleston Southern. Virginia Tech and Duke are up next. |
| Kansas | (0) Still the second-highest one-loss team after taking care of business last week against ETSU. Chaminade and Colorado are up next. |
| Oregon | (+1) Like Ohio State, I could have put Oregon higher. They've pretty much crushed every team they've played, including Houston last week. |
| Arizona | (-1) Thursday's home scare against South Dakota State certainly wasn't the prettiest. Still a lot of reasons to love the Wildcats though. |
| Maryland | (+1) The Terps have gotten better and better since their opener. Let's see how they handle some non-con challenges in Temple and Notre Dame. |
| VCU | (+1) VCU is starting to roll. The Rams followed up a big home win over LSU with 28-point and 30-point wins over Jacksonville State and FGCU. |
| Kentucky | (+1) The Wildcats have been able to put Evansville behind them with consecutive 20-point and 25-point wins. They should keep rolling. |
| Tennessee | (+1) Not much last week for the Vols, just the run-of-the-mill stomping of Alabama State. Not the same team as last year, but still good. |
| Seton Hall | (+2) Myles Powell. That's it. That's the tweet. In all seriousness, he may be the best player in the country. Averaging 28 points per game. |
| Utah State | (+3) Still not sure how Utah State came back from 19 down to beat LSU. But that kind of comeback against a good team means a jump for USU. |
| Colorado | (+5) I like what I'm seeing from Colorado. Added to their résumé with a good win over UC Irvine and a gritty low-scoring win over Wyoming. |
| Baylor | (+5) Similarly, I like what I saw from Baylor. Coastal Carolina gave them a fight, but they pulled it out. Then beat Nova in a great one. |
| Auburn | (NEW) The Tigers have started to turn a corner. After early struggles with Georgia Southern and South Alabama, they've performed quite well. |
| Xavier | (-4) Sorry, Xavier. Teams tend to drop after losses, even 6-1 teams that lost to Florida by 5. Not enough to kick them out of the top 25. |
| Texas | (-10) Biggest drop of the week following a hugely disappointing loss to Georgetown. The road win over Purdue keeps Texas in the top 25. |
| Wisconsin | (-2) Like I said last week, these rankings are largely dependent on what other teams do. The Badgers won, but other teams impressed more. |
| Butler | (-5) I might have had Butler a tad too high last week. A minor scare from Morehead State lets them fall down into the correct ranking. |
| San Diego State | (NEW) The Aztecs have impressed me. Better than Utah State? Very well could be. Next 5: Michigan, Washington, Arkansas, Oklahoma, DePaul |
