Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Michigan | (NEW) Yep. From unranked to No. 1 in a week. Michigan is 7-0 with wins over Gonzaga, UNC, Iowa State and Creighton. Best résumé in the land. |
| Louisville | (0) The No. 2 team stays put. If not for Michigan's insane week, Louisville would have been No. 1. Top two teams play each other on Tuesday. |
| Virginia | (0) Virginia is something else. Held Maine to 14 points in the first half and two fewer in the second. Would like to see more points though. |
| Ohio State | (+1) The Buckeyes are dominating. Every win but one has been by 19 points or more. All of the top four teams belong to the ACC and Big Ten. |
| Kansas | (+4) Kansas has played very, very well since the Week 1 loss to Duke. That includes a wild overtime victory over Dayton in Maui last week. |
| Maryland | (+6) I was skeptical of Maryland at first, but I'm a believer now. A 21-point stomping of Marquette is what finally flips the switch for me. |
| Arizona | (+4) Wake Forest and Pepperdine gave them more trouble than you'd like to see, but wins are wins. Other teams losing gives Arizona a jump. |
| North Carolina | (-2) A relatively close loss to red-hot Michigan followed by a great win over Oregon. A small drop seems like a fair deal for the Tar Heels. |
| San Diego State | (+16) If you haven't been paying attention to SDSU, it's time to start. Big win over Creighton + comeback win over Iowa = third best résumé. |
| Gonzaga | (-6) A loss to Michigan is understandable. An 18-point loss to Michigan is less so. The Zags get penalized heavier than UNC because of it. |
| Kentucky | (+3) Not too much to report on here. Took care of business against UAB last week. As is often the case, UK moves up with other teams losing. |
| Florida State | (NEW) A massive week propels FSU into a high spot in my rankings. Back-to-back wins over Tennessee and Purdue make for a very strong résumé. |
| Duke | (-12) Similar to Kentucky's Evansville drop with the SFA loss. Like Kentucky, Duke doesn't drop farther because of the great Kansas win. |
| Auburn | (+6) Another team that I was skeptical of at first, but I'm changing my tune. The Tigers just rolled through the Legends Classic with ease. |
| Colorado | (+3) The Buffs keep rising with win after win. McKinley Wright was supposed to be "the guy" for Colorado, but it's actually been Tyler Bey. |
| Oklahoma State | (NEW) The Cowboys are on the radar. They're on fire right now with consecutive slappings of Cuse and Ole Miss. Both part of that 7-0 record. |
| West Virginia | (NEW) Oklahoma State is not the only 7-0 Big 12 team. WVU is just a step behind with one fewer signature win, but, again, they're 7-0. |
| Michigan State | (-10) I don't like having two-loss teams in the top 25 right now, but I'll make an exception. A semi-close loss to VT doesn't kick MSU out. |
| Baylor | (0) The Bears haven't played a game since their win over Nova, so they stay put. Big games against Arizona and Butler are coming up soon. |
| Dayton | (NEW) It's rare that teams jump into the rankings after losing, but Dayton deserves it. They stomped UGA and VT and took Kansas to overtime. |
| Tennessee | (-6) Tennessee didn't play that well against FSU, but they backed it up with a great buzzer-beater win over VCU. Moderate drop for the Vols. |
| Xavier | (-1) Fairly quiet weak for Xavier with a 25-point win over Lipscomb. I'm not a fan of dropping them a spot, but that's just the way it goes. |
| Oregon | (-13) The only other two-loss team that I'm making an exception for. I just can't leave them out after taking Gonzaga and UNC to the wire. |
| Butler | (0) Solid wins over Missouri and Stanford. The Bulldogs are certainly one of the quieter undefeated teams. Keep and eye on them for now. |
| DePaul | (NEW) I'm no coward! 8-0 DePaul should be ranked. Best start in 33 years. Next 5: Arkansas, Washington, Seton Hall, Saint Mary's, Utah State |
