Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Ohio State | (+3) Every single week, I have had a different team at No. 1. After dismantling UNC and Penn State, it's Ohio State's turn to be at the top. |
| Louisville | (0) A win over my previous No. 1 Michigan nearly put the Cardinals back at the top spot, but Ohio State just looked too good. No. 2 it is. |
| Kansas | (+2) The Jayhawks still haven't missed a beat since their loss to open the season. A 14-point win over Colorado looks good on the résumé. |
| Maryland | (+2) The Terps narrowly escaped an ugly home loss to Illinois after trailing by 15. It doesn't get any easier though. Up next, Penn State. |
| Michigan | (-4) Certainly not Michigan's best performance against Louisville, but they rebounded by dropping 101 on Iowa. They remain in the top 5. |
| Gonzaga | (+4) The Zags now have wins over Oregon and Washington away from home. They can complete the Pac-12 trifecta with a win in Arizona Saturday. |
| Duke | (+6) Couldn't have rebounded from SFA much better. Dominating win in East Lansing followed by a comeback win in Blacksburg. Classic Duke. |
| Kentucky | (+3) A tradition in my polls: Teams getting a boost despite not doing much because higher-ranked teams lost. Kentucky benefits from it here. |
| Virginia | (-6) Virginia is such an anomaly. 29-point loss at Purdue proves they have shooting issues. Solution? Another defensive masterwork vs. UNC. |
| San Diego State | (-1) San José State win was wayyyy too close for comfort. Would have been a devastating blow. But a win is a win, so, small drop for SDSU. |
| Auburn | (+3) Furman took Auburn to OT, but Furman is better than you might think. An undefeated with other teams losing? Tigers move up a few spots. |
| Dayton | (+8) Dayton is very real and very scary. Had a 10-point win over Saint Mary's with a lead as big as 24. Watch out for the Flyers, A-10. |
| Baylor | (+6) That's two quality wins (Nova, Zona) and one quality loss (Washington) on the Bears' résumé. Tuesday's bout with Butler is must-watch. |
| Arizona | (-7) A drop of seven is harsh for Zona's first loss, but I don't see anywhere else to put them. Beat Gonzaga and they'll go right back up. |
| Butler | (+9) Look out for Butler. Predicted to finish eighth in the Big East, already has wins over Stanford, Ole Miss and UF. Could get Baylor too. |
| Tennessee | (+5) They get the same treatment as Kentucky. Got a nice 29-point win over FAMU, but they only move up this much because other teams lost. |
| Xavier | (+5) Ditto for Xavier, though with perhaps more reason, considering the win over Cincinnati. Naji Marshall is looking really, really good. |
| Oregon | (+5) Third straight member of the "took care of business" club. Massive opportunity on Saturday to move back up with a win over Michigan. |
| Colorado | (-4) A loss to a great Kansas team doesn't drop the Buffs too much, especially when their best two players (Wright and Bey) had off nights. |
| Florida State | (-8) Not a very pretty outing for the Noles in Bloomington, losing by 16. They stay in the top 25 after absolutely spanking Clemson though. |
| West Virginia | (-4) You can argue that ticky-tacky calls cost WVU its undefeated status to St. John's. But a loss is a loss. They fall a few spots for it. |
| Memphis | (NEW) Welcome back, Tigers! I've been expecting you. I dig an 8-1 start with Wiseman out for much of it. Just don't be so close with UAB. |
| Villanova | (NEW) Nova seems to have righted the ship after the ugly Ohio State loss. A gauntlet of Kansas-Xavier-Marquette-Creighton ends the year. |
| Texas | (NEW) People seem to have forgotten about Texas since the loss to Georgetown. They're 8-1 with a win at Purdue, folks. Back to being ranked. |
| Wichita State | (NEW) WSU has flown under the radar. 8-1 with the win at OKST. They might be for real. Next 5: Utah State, Purdue, VCU, Stanford, Marquette |
