Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Gonzaga | (0) For the first time this season, I have a team repeating at the No. 1 spot. Looking at the road ahead, the Zags could stay there a while. |
| Duke | (+1) I think it's safe to say that Duke is back to being Duke. Résumé looking strong with wins over Michigan State, Kansas and Georgetown. |
| Ohio State | (-1) An eight-point only loss drops OSU only a spot. Strong résumé helps, but it's clear that losses are having a lesser impact than before. |
| Kansas | (+1) Debated putting Kansas at No. 3 and OSU here, but I like the Buckeyes' résumé slightly more (W's over Nova/PSU/UK > BYU/UD/Stanford). |
| San Diego State | (+1) One of two undefeated teams heading into the new year. With wins over BYU, Creighton and Iowa, SDSU has the better résumé of the two. |
| Baylor | (+1) A week off for Baylor does them well. Very strong résumé with wins over Nova, Zona and Butler, plus a three-point loss to Washington. |
| Auburn | (+1) Unbeaten heading into 2020, but there's hesitation to rank them highly. Predictive metrics don't love Auburn, and they lack a Q1 win. |
| Oregon | (+1) Résumé matters once again. W's over Memphis, Seton Hall and Michigan, close losses to UNC and Gonzaga. Ducks open 2020 at Colorado. |
| Louisville | (-5) Loss to UK reveals the ugly truth that Louisville doesn't have much on the résumé: Just the Michigan win. But they did take UK to OT. |
| West Virginia | (+2) WVU gets into the top 10 with the OSU win. Underrated wins over WSU and UNI also stand out. Now let's see if they can beat KU and OKST. |
| Memphis | (-1) Victim of circumstance. Drops because their best win (Tennessee) doesn't match WVU's best win (OSU). Tigers look fine without Wiseman. |
| Butler | (-1) Same situation at Memphis in terms of dropping. Who would have thought Butler would be 12-1 going into conference play? Outstanding. |
| Wichita State | (0) Not much to report here. Hopefully the AP Poll rightfully ranks the Shockers this week. It's a travesty that they weren't last week. |
| Michigan | (0) Quality wins and quality losses are Michigan's friend. That's the explanation for a team with three losses being ranked this highly. |
| Dayton | (0) The résumé doesn't exactly match some of these other teams, but the eye test sure does. And the predictive metrics all love Dayton too. |
| Florida State | (0) I really have nothing to say about FSU, but I like to fill out these description boxes completely, so I'm gonna do that. There we go. |
| Villanova | (0) Pretty boring week with most teams staying in place or moving just a few spots. Nova taking the week off is the personification of this. |
| Michigan State | (+1) I'm flipping Michigan State and Maryland, but it isn't arbitrarily. The Spartans have looked much better recently than the Terps have. |
| Maryland | (-1) MD's last three has featured two L's and a meh win over Bryant. MSU has decimated teams left and right. I feel this move is justified. |
| Kentucky | (+4) I toyed with putting UK higher than this with the Louisville win, but I also had to consider bad losses and poor metrics. Sorry, BBN. |
| Penn State | (+2) I have reason to believe in PSU for once. Good résumé, great metrics. Very much looking forward to PSU vs. Iowa in Philly next week. |
| Virginia | (0) UVA followed up an atrocious performance against SCAR with... a too-close-for-comfort win over Navy. You aren't helping yourself, Cavs. |
| Colorado | (NEW) Buffs return to the top 25. Win over Dayton wasn't quite enough to do it last week but Liberty, UW and Stanford losses make it happen. |
| Iowa | (NEW) Look out for the Hawkeyes. Big home loss to DePaul is in the distant past with massive wins over Minnesota, Cincinnati and Iowa State. |
| Marquette | (NEW) Coin flip between Creighton and Marquette. Went for the better top win (Purdue). Next 5: Creighton, Texas Tech, Arkansas, UNI, Xavier |
