Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Duke | (+1) And No. 1 changes hands again. Not the best résumé in the country (that's Butler) but the best team. Leads in AdjEM by a wide margin. |
| Kansas | (+2) Kansas has not played a bad game yet. KU's two losses are by a combined three points to other top teams. Five Q1 wins (three are 1-A). |
| San Diego State | (+2) A couple very close teams could take this spot. I'm taking the undefeated with the best résumé. Utah State win proves SDSU is for real. |
| Butler | (+8) I had Butler too low last week. I know I'm putting them above Baylor despite the head-to-head, but the Bulldogs have six quality wins. |
| Baylor | (+1) Baylor is going to be a tough team to beat in the Big 12, and the big win over Texas proves it. Jared Butler has lived up to the hype. |
| Gonzaga | (-5) A five-spot drop despite not losing a game? That happens when Portland and Pepperdine take you to the wire. Zags look beatable in WCC. |
| Auburn | (0) Auburn got a good win over Miss State, but it wasn't quite Q1. No upward movement due to having the weakest résumé of the top teams. |
| Wichita State | (+5) Wichita State is still decimating teams left and right, and the 20-point win over Ole Miss proves it. Huge game with Memphis is next. |
| Oregon | (-1) The loss at Colorado isn't too bad, and we can't ignore quality wins over Seton Hall, Memphis, Michigan and Utah. Just a one-spot drop. |
| Ohio State | (-7) Ugly goings recently with back-to-back losses, including Wisconsin at home. Still, the résumé saves OSU: Wins over UK, Nova and PSU. |
| Florida State | (+5) Taking out Louisville on the road is no easy task. Pair that with previous wins over Purdue and Florida and you have one enticing FSU. |
| West Virginia | (-2) West Virginia played a hell of a game against Kansas and shouldn't be faulted too much for the loss. Big 12 has another top contender. |
| Michigan State | (+5) It took some time, but Michigan State is back in business. Off to a 4-0 start in Big Ten play. Likely the favorite to win it again. |
| Dayton | (+1) As they say in the business, a win is a win. St. Joe's has always been ugly for Dayton, but they got the job done. Flyers still flying. |
| Memphis | (-4) Memphis finally looks vulnerable without Wiseman, as Tulane and Georgia proved. AAC play is going to be interesting. Up next: WSU. |
| Maryland | (+3) After a rough stretch, the Terps have rebounded by "stuffing Indiana in a trash can on live TV." Next, let's see how they handle OSU. |
| Kentucky | (+3) The Cats are hot. Head-to-head wins over Louisville and Michigan State suggest they should be higher but, ya know. Evansville and Utah. |
| Louisville | (-8) Louisville is in a bit of free fall. Weak résumé is being further exposed by losses like FSU. Luckily for them, metrics are favorable. |
| Penn State | (+2) Gritty win over Iowa in Palestra, despite Luka Garza's best efforts. Tuesday in the RAC is going to be wild. Must-watch Big Ten action. |
| Virginia | (+2) That's one way to rebound. Absolutely spanked rival Virginia Tech at home. Perhaps a sign of good things to come for the Cavaliers. |
| Michigan | (-7) Michigan's once-great résumé is slipping with losses racking up and other teams grabbing quality wins. Still the top four-loss team. |
| Villanova | (-5) Nova is interesting. Two bad losses to good teams (OSU, Marquette), a close win over KU, and total dominance nearly everywhere else. |
| Colorado | (0) Colorado was oh-so close to taking a big leap with the win over Oregon, but they stumbled and immediately lost to Oregon State. Tough. |
| Texas Tech | (NEW) I think Texas Tech is back. Just annihilated a solid Oklahoma State team. Baylor and WVU are up next. How will the Red Raiders fare? |
| Arizona | (NEW) Another metric darling despite meh results. Domination of ASU brings them back. Next 5: Iowa, Rutgers, Arkansas, Creighton, Marquette |
