Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Baylor | (+4) And we have a new No. 1. Sorry Duke and Butler. With back-to-back road wins over TTU and KU, Baylor has the best résumé in the country. |
| Duke | (-1) Despite having an inferior résumé to some of the other top teams, Duke still has a firm grasp at No. 1 in the KenPom AdjEM rankings. |
| San Diego State | (0) SDSU is breezing through conference play and remains undefeated at 17-0. Getting genuinely curious as to when the Aztecs finally lose. |
| Butler | (0) Butler has the second best résumé after Baylor and is 3-0 in the Big East. Through 16 games, LaVall Jordan has a stellar case for COTY. |
| Gonzaga | (0) After being nearly upset by Portland and Pepperdine, the Zags built confidence by slamming San Diego and Santa Clara. Back to normal? |
| Auburn | (+1) Vandy certainly gave Auburn a scare, but, as they say, a win is a win, and Auburn has 15 of 'em compared to zero losses. Still perfect. |
| Wichita State | (+1) WSU proved me right that it is a top 10 team by beating Memphis, then nearly proved me wrong by almost losing to UConn. Don't do that. |
| Kansas | (-6) There you go. KU finally played a bad game. And yet, despite three losses, the metrics and résumé don't lie: KU is still a top 10 team. |
| Oregon | (0) Thrilling home win over Zona. The Ducks are off to a 3-1 start in conference. Right now, I like Pritchard as the Pac-12 POTY over Nnaji. |
| Florida State | (+1) Quietly one of the better teams in college basketball. The Noles are top 15 in KenPom and own a few really good wins. Watch out, ACC. |
| West Virginia | (+1) WVU has a serious argument to be ranked higher than No. 11. Responded to a close road loss to KU with great wins over OKST and TTU. |
| Dayton | (+2) Quiet week for the Flyers, just a 28-point win over UMass. With other top teams losing, Dayton benefits and moves up a couple spots. |
| Kentucky | (+4) Kentucky remains on a roll with wins over Georgia and Alabama in the past week, the former on the road. SEC dominance as usual, maybe? |
| Louisville | (+4) Louisville's free fall stops with moralizing wins over Miami at home and Notre Dame on the road. But a trip to Duke looms Saturday. |
| Michigan State | (-2) What the hell? MSU looks unbeatable through five B10 games then loses by 29 at Purdue. Good résumé elsewhere keeps them from free fall. |
| Villanova | (+6) Other ranked teams losing this week also keeps MSU from free fall. Same logic applies to Nova, who jumps six after beating Georgetown. |
| Memphis | (-2) Lost badly to WSU. Made a game of it near the end but trailed by as much as 19. Better figure it out w/o Wiseman before it's too late! |
| Maryland | (-2) Losing by 18 at Iowa is a tough pill to swallow, but let's not forget Maryland's four quality wins (Marquette, Illinois, Indiana, OSU). |
| Colorado | (+4) Colorado is looking nice. Absolutely eviscerated Utah at home and now has a road trip through the Grand Canyon State coming next week. |
| Seton Hall | (NEW) Surprise, surprise! The Pirates are back. Seton Hall takes advantage of other ranked teams falling by starting Big East play 4-0. |
| Stanford | (NEW) Stanford is quietly 14-2 with a 3-0 start in conference play. But their résumé still lacks a defining win (closest would be over OU). |
| Arkansas | (NEW) Rejoice, Hogs! I have you ranked for the first time this year. But it's only because nearly every damn in my rankings last week lost. |
| Michigan | (-2) The rankings are so wild that we have a five-loss team in Michigan hanging around. It's the quality wins that saved them, as per usual. |
| Indiana | (NEW) I may as well throw darts at a wall now. We'll go with IU, despite nearly losing at home to Northwestern. College basketball is weird. |
| Creighton | (NEW) A Q1 win on the road this week? Sure, you're ranked. What a crazy week, man. Next 5: Illinois, Ohio State, Iowa, Arizona, Virginia |
