Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Baylor | (0) Another week of top teams being upset, but Baylor survives. A quiet week of K-State and OKST is next before the Big 12 storm comes in. |
| San Diego State | (0) Just six conference games separate the Aztecs from regular season perfection. Tough tests at Air Force, Boise State and Nevada loom. |
| Gonzaga | (0) Close call with a solid USF team on the road, but that's not enough for me to drop the Zags at all. They're still perfect in WCC play. |
| Kansas | (0) KU rounds out the same top four as last week, as well as the consensus top four for experts around the nation. When will it change? |
| Dayton | (+1) Duquesne certainly gave them a scare, but the Flyers adjusted nicely to remain undefeated in A-10 play. Moves up a spot with FSU loss. |
| Louisville | (+1) Louisville is looking pretty unstoppable right now. And this is without Jordan Nwora playing his best basketball. The Cards are deep. |
| Duke | (+1) Not playing as dominantly as the Cardinals right now, but well enough to move up in my rankings. A 2-0 week is always a good thing. |
| Florida State | (-3) Now it gets interesting. So many top teams lost this week. Who do I pick? I'm going FSU, who played a good game at UVA despite losing. |
| West Virginia | (+2) Who's up next? Let's go WVU, who, despite losing at TTU this week, rises with a solid road performance and a revenge win over K-State. |
| Maryland | (+6) MD is playing great ball right now, tacking on a home win over Iowa to the résumé. Why such a big rise? Other teams lost, of course. |
| Auburn | (+6) Confidence-boosting win. Auburn is finally putting together a résumé that matches the record. Opportunities vs. LSU and Arkansas next. |
| Villanova | (-2) Sloppy outing vs. Creighton results in a drop. Just couldn't stop the Bluejays from long. Still, they're 17-4 and 7-2 in Big East play. |
| Seton Hall | (-4) Drop for SHU after that performance vs. Xavier. Easily one of their two worst outings of the year. Still leads the Big East though. |
| Creighton | (+9) Hi there, Bluejays! Creighton is incredibly hot right now, winning their last three conference games by double digits. Under the radar. |
| Oregon | (-3) Close call vs. Cal and couldn't hang on vs. Stanford. The Cardinal is a good team, but Oregon should be beating both teams handily. |
| Kentucky | (-2) Ugly win vs. Vanderbilt followed by a solid performance vs. Auburn that ultimately ended in a loss. Just a small drop for the Cats. |
| Michigan State | (-4) Good idea: Playing good basketball on the road. Bad idea: Waiting until it's too late to make a comeback effort. Study up, Spartans! |
| Iowa | (0) Played hard in a loss at Maryland and grabbed a Q1 win over Illinois on Sunday. And in case you didn't know, Luka Garza is pretty good. |
| Penn State | (+6) A 15-point home win over a tournament hopeful and a double-digit Big Ten victory on the road. I reward that with a big rise in ranking. |
| Colorado | (-1) Dropped a should-have-won game over UCLA but rebounded nicely by stomping USC on the road. Buffs continue to contend in the Pac-12. |
| Illinois | (-1) Hard to punish the Illini too much for giving it their all at Iowa. As we all know, it ain't easy to win on the road in the Big Ten. |
| Butler | (-7) Butler is not the impenetrable wall we once thought they were. Losers in four of the last six after starting the year 15-1. Yikes. |
| LSU | (NEW) Résumé isn't great, but wins are wins, and the Tigers have now earned 11 of those in a row. Only remaining undefeated in SEC play. |
| Arizona | (NEW) A 2-0 week with both wins coming on the road means Arizona is back in my rankings. Still lacking in SOR, but the metrics love them. |
| URI | (NEW) Ambitious? Perhaps. But URI is playing some fine ball right now. Next 5: Rutgers, Wichita State, Northern Iowa, Marquette, Houston |
