Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Baylor | (0) Yet another week at the top. After weeks of shifting going on in the upper ranks, the top teams have settled in and they may not change. |
| San Diego State | (0) In Saturday's top 16 reveal, the selection committee placed Gonzaga ahead of SDSU. I personally disagree, but I understand the argument. |
| Gonzaga | (0) Remember when Gonzaga almost lost to Portland and Pepperdine? An ancient memory now. The Bulldogs crushed St. Mary's in Moraga by 30. |
| Kansas | (0) Kansas might be most well-functioning team in college basketball this year. They have played exactly one bad game (Jan. 11 vs. Baylor). |
| Dayton | (0) I'm glad to see the committee gave Dayton the respect they deserve. Some people are still sleeping on the Flyers. They're really good. |
| Louisville | (0) Duke appeared ahead of Louisville in the top 16, and people complained that Louisville should be higher. Let's make something clear: |
| Duke | (0) Head-to-head doesn't matter much for résumé. It's about body of work, and Duke's is better. Head-to-head matters for the top 25, though. |
| Florida State | (0) It's funny to look back at how stacked we thought the ACC was going to be, and now there are only three clear tournament teams. Crazy. |
| Maryland | (+1) Finally, a change in the rankings! This Maryland team feels different than teams past. Turgeonball can only hold you down for so long. |
| Auburn | (+1) Call it luck, but Auburn is the master of finding a way to win in the worst of situations. That'll help the Tigers greatly in March. |
| Seton Hall | (+2) Saturday's result made it clear: Seton Hall is the premier Big East team. Not even a sloppy loss to Xavier can keep them down for long. |
| West Virginia | (-3) A 10-point loss at Oklahoma is less than ideal for a team fighting for a top-2 seed, but that result won't hurt WVU much in the end. |
| Penn State | (+6) I hope I'm not being too biased with this, but I feel like a win at MSU as part of six straight Big Ten wins is grounds for a big jump. |
| Kentucky | (+2) They also went 2-0 like Penn State and were ranked higher last week, but I don't think Kentucky's wins had quite the same magnitude. |
| Villanova | (-3) Losses don't compound for bracketology, but they do for the top 25 rankings, and Villanova is on a three-game losing streak right now. |
| Creighton | (-2) The loss at Providence isn't great, but they backed it up with a nice home win over St. John's. Creighton is a tournament sleeper IMO. |
| Colorado | (+3) I wouldn't say that Colorado has taken the title of "Pac-12's premier team" from Oregon yet, but they are playing better right now. |
| Oregon | (-3) Oregon appears to be in a bit of a funk, dropping back-to-back contests to Stanford and Oregon State. Hopefully it doesn't persist. |
| Marquette | (NEW) Marquette is hot right now, winning three straight, including a convincing win over Butler. They narrowly missed my top 25 last week. |
| Iowa | (-2) Purdue may be excellent at home, but any top 25 team that loses at Mackey Arena by 36 points is destined for a drop in the rankings. |
| URI | (+4) Let's give Rhode Island some more love. They've won 10 in a row, after all. What if Tuesday's battle at Dayton was a ranked matchup? |
| Illinois | (-1) Illinois played a darn good first half against Maryland but couldn't seem to do much in the second half. That's two straight losses. |
| Houston | (NEW) Houston seems to be cutting through the American with relative ease. Their only two conference losses came by a combined four points. |
| Butler | (-2) Butler doesn't have the same juice it once had. They pulled out a tight win over Villanova, but Marquette wiped the floor with them. |
| Michigan State | (-8) Three straight losses, but they came against good opponents. Next 7: Northern Iowa, LSU, Texas Tech, Rutgers, Ohio State, Arizona, BYU |
