Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Gonzaga | (+1) Suggs looks like the real deal. Is this Mark Few's most talented team ever? Maybe too early to make that suggestion, but.. holy cow. |
| Baylor | (-1) No slight on Baylor at all. The only reason for the drop is because Gonzaga looks unbelievable. Scott Drew's Bears aren't far behind. |
| Wisconsin | (+3) Only two games deep against not-so-great competition, but the Badgers appear to be firing on all cylinders. That experience helps. |
| Iowa | (+1) Luka Garza. Need I say anything else? I will, because I like to fill these out completely. Hawkeyes look confident through two games. |
| West Virginia | (+7) My polls tend to be very results-based, especially early on, hence the big jump. WVU has three above average wins to begin the year. |
| Michigan State | (+5) Back-to-back double digit wins to begin the year, including a 26-0 scoring run against Notre Dame. Doing it without Winston or Tillman. |
| Kansas | (-3) Hard to punish Kansas too much for putting up 90 against Gonzaga. This drop is more about letting St. Joe's hang around too long. |
| Houston | (+10) Kelvin Sampson's Cougars are rolling through three games, including an 11-point win over Texas Tech. Fantastic results = big jump. |
| Illinois | (+1) Domination of NC A&T, domination of Chicago State, scary close win over Ohio. What to make of it? Illinois will have growing pains. |
| Creighton | (-3) So-so win against NDSU to begin the year. Would like to see that vaunted 3-point offense live up to its name next time around. |
| Villanova | (-8) Great win over ASU negated by a sloppy overtime loss to VT. At least Robinson-Earl looks like a bonafide stud through three games. |
| Richmond | (NEW) Spiders won in Lexington by 12 and didn't even play their best basketball (7-25 from 3, Gilyard with 6 points). Terrifying thought. |
| St. Louis | (NEW) The A-10 has some power at the top. A 2-0 start with a win over previously ranked LSU has put the Billikens in the national spotlight. |
| Duke | (-5) A win is a win, but Duke looked scared against a vastly inferior opponent. Blue Devils will need the returners to step up before long. |
| San Diego State | (NEW) No Malachi Flynn? No problem! Aztecs take down previously ranked UCLA by 15. Matt Mitchell should fill Flynn's leadership role nicely. |
| Virginia Tech | (NEW) Don't forget that close call against Radford, but VT came all out against Nova and got the win. So impressive. Mike Young—what a hire. |
| Rutgers | (+2) Slow starts in the first two games, got their act together against Hofstra. Let's see the deep ball improve before conference play. |
| Western Kentucky | (NEW) They may be 2-1, but WKU has played like a top 25 team. Wins over UNI and Memphis, tight loss to WVU. Clear C-USA favorite so far. |
| Arizona State | (-3) OK performance in a loss against Nova, good wins elsewhere. Can't punish too much. The best should be yet to come for the Sun Devils. |
| Louisville | (NEW) So-so win against PVAMU, but a smacking of Evansville and a nice, gritty win over Seton Hall are worthy of a spot in the rankings. |
| Texas | (0) Small sample size with just one game under the belt against a sub-200 KP team, but Texas looked good nonetheless. More data needed. |
| Texas Tech | (-5) Love the 2-0 start, but a bad outing against Houston, especially from long range, shows reason to be concerned. TTU needs time to grow. |
| Clemson | (NEW) The Tigers probably won't get much AP poll attention, but double-digit wins over Mississippi State and Purdue is nothing to ignore. |
| North Carolina | (0) Solid win over Charleston, not much else to note. Caleb Love appears to be taking the role of the departed Cole Anthony quite well. |
| Colorado | (NEW) Two nice wins away from home to begin the year. Good start for the Buffs. Next 5: Ohio State, Kentucky, Virginia, Indiana, Alabama |
