Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Gonzaga | (0) Still the team to beat in college basketball. WVU certainly gave them a run for their money, but the Zags got the job done in the end. |
| Baylor | (0) No change at No. 2. A 13-point win over Illinois is huge. Now excuse me while I cry about the cancellation of Gonzaga vs. Baylor... |
| Iowa | (+1) Iowa hasn't faced the toughest competition, but they've dominated mid-major opponents. Garza has 102 total points through three games. |
| West Virginia | (+1) Mad props for giving Gonzaga all they could handle for 40 minutes, even in a loss. Win over Georgetown was a little too close, though. |
| Michigan State | (+1) Beat Duke in Cameron for the first time in under Izzo. However, MSU didn't play that well in wins over Detroit and WMU. Small jump. |
| Houston | (+2) South Carolina gave them a real scare, but Houston turned it around into a double-digit win. That's the mark of a good basketball team. |
| Villanova | (+4) What a way to rebound. After a messy loss to VT last week, Nova defeated a great Texas team in Austin. Back to business as usual. |
| Creighton | (+2) Now, THAT'S the Creighton we thought we were going to see. Back-to-back wins of at least 27, and the 3-point percentage is back up. |
| Texas | (+12) Sometimes, teams can lose and still take a massive jump in rank. Wins over IU and UNC and a close loss to Nova does that for Texas. |
| Wisconsin | (-7) The first misstep with the loss to Marquette. But Marquette is a solid team, and it's hard to defend a buzzer beater like that. |
| Illinois | (-2) The Illini played tough against Baylor for 30 minutes, but they let the game get away. Some growing to do here, but encouraging early. |
| Kansas | (-5) Uh, Kansas? You OK? The same team that took Gonzaga to the wire and beat Kentucky earlier this week nearly lost to NDSU at home. Yikes. |
| St. Louis | (0) The win over LSU is really the only standout on the résumé so far, but 53-point over UAPB shows that SLU isn't just playing around. |
| Richmond | (-2) No new evidence, as all games last week were canceled due to COVID concerns within Richmond. They stay at the same spot, more or less. |
| Louisville | (+5) I was high on WKU last week. They gave Louisville a fight early, but the Cardinals entered another level 30 minutes in. Very impressed. |
| Duke | (-2) Tough to lose that MSU game when you were up by 10 early, but they followed it up with their most complete game yet: a 22-point win. |
| San Diego State | (-2) This poll movement isn't reflective of SDSU's performance (just an OK win over Pepperdine this week) but rather how other teams did. |
| Rutgers | (-1) Like Richmond, Rutgers didn't play last week. As such, nothing to note on performance-wise, so the ranking stays about the same. |
| Florida State | (NEW) Back in the poll after finally playing a game, and it was a good one: a 28-point win over North Florida. Big tests in IU and UF next. |
| Virginia Tech | (-4) The same team that played nearly perfectly against Villanova almost lost to VMI at home a week later. That's college basketball for ya! |
| Arizona State | (-2) Another poll movement not reflective of Arizona State's performance but rather how other schools did. Notched a conference win at Cal. |
| Texas Tech | (0) After the loss to Houston, Texas Tech is back in business with consecutive wins of 34 and 41 points. McClung has been great so far. |
| Clemson | (0) Notched another double-digit win this past week, albeit over a MEAC team. Looking forward to Wednesday vs. fellow undefeated Maryland. |
| North Carolina | (0) Beat a good Stanford team, lost a close one to Texas. No movement. Need to see that 3-point percentage increase, though (1-9 vs. Texas). |
| Xavier | (NEW) I feel like I'd be remiss if I didn't rank the only 6-0 team in the nation. Next 5: Missouri, Virginia, Florida, Ohio State, Colorado |
