Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Gonzaga | (0) Gonzaga has scored fewer than 90 points once this season (87 against West Virginia). Best offense (and team) in CBB by a country mile. |
| Baylor | (0) And Baylor may have the best defense in CBB (though not by country mile), holding all but one opponent to below 70 points in each game. |
| Kansas | (+1) Seems like the battle for the Big 12 is going to be between Baylor and Kansas, the latter notching big wins over WVU and TTU last week. |
| Houston | (+1) Dark-horse candidate to go undefeated. Dismantled Temple and pulled out an 11-point road win over a good UCF team to start AAC play. |
| Villanova | (+2) Great start in Big East play for Villanova, now 3-0. Robinson-Earl certainly has to be in All-American contention at this point. |
| Wisconsin | (+2) Splitting hairs here in rankings between Nova and Wiscy. Badgers have been equally impressive, notching a nine-point road win over MSU. |
| Texas | (-1) No new data for the Longhorns, who had last week off. Conference play resumes in the new year on Saturday with a tough game at Kansas. |
| Tennessee | (+5) Tennessee has been seriously impressive through six games, winning each of the last four by at least 20. That defense is ridiculous. |
| Iowa | (-6) Blew a seven-point lead with 43 seconds remaining to lose in double OT, so they need to tumble a bit. But Iowa is still in good shape. |
| Creighton | (+1) The Big East has a lot of good teams, and Creighton appears to be near the top, now 3-1 in conference play with a good win over Xavier. |
| Texas Tech | (+5) Another big notch on the résumé with a two-point win at Oklahoma Tuesday. Almost had a meltdown in the final minutes but got it done. |
| Missouri | (0) Hey, a win's a win, no matter how ugly. Important wins over Oregon and Illinois are still on the résumé, keeping the Tigers in place. |
| Rutgers | (-3) A 12-point loss at Ohio State isn't horrible, but it does warrant a drop. Still, Rutgers has two massive wins (Syracuse, Illinois). |
| West Virginia | (-5) WVU played toe-to-toe basketball with Kansas for 25 minutes. Unfortunately for the Mountaineers, basketball games are 40 minutes long. |
| Michigan | (+5) Penn State is the only "marquee" win on Michigan's résumé, but the Wolverines have looked great ever since the Oakland scare, now 7-0. |
| Oregon | (+1) Again, splitting hairs with Michigan, as Oregon has the better "marquee" win (neutral vs. Seton Hall) but also has a loss (Missouri). |
| St. Louis | (-3) Saint Louis has cooled down since its red-hot start, losing to Minnesota and earning a scare from UMKC. Still the best A10 team though. |
| Xavier | (-3) A loss may be a loss, but a five-point loss to Creighton shows that Xavier does deserve to be ranked among the game's top teams. |
| Clemson | (0) Just a win over Morehead State last week, but that defense is so good (kept the Eagles to just 51 points). No. 2 defense in KenPom. |
| Minnesota | (NEW) What a start! Yes, there are some ugly wins in there, but an 8-1 record with wins over Iowa and Saint Louis deserves a ranking. |
| Arkansas | (0) Make that an 8-0 start for the Razorbacks. Every one has been at home with North Texas being the only team better than Quad III though. |
| Northwestern | (NEW) Northwestern is officially on notice. Picked dead last in the B1G preseason poll, now 6-1 with wins over MSU, OSU and Indiana. Insane. |
| Florida State | (-1) Didn't do too much last week with a generic 13-point home win over Gardner-Webb being the only result. Good one at Clemson on Tuesday. |
| San Diego State | (NEW) What a recovery! San Diego State puts a bad loss to BYU behind them with a 25-point thrashing of Saint Mary's. Back in the rankings. |
| Illinois | (NEW) I don't like ranking a three-loss team... but Illinois gets in. Next 5: NC State, Colorado, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Louisville |
