Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Gonzaga | (0) Another 2-0 week, including a 14-point win at Saint Mary's. Feb. 27 at BYU might be the only remaining roadblock for the perfect season. |
| Baylor | (0) Baylor continues to roll too, adding an eight-point win over Texas Tech to the résumé. A Gonzaga-Baylor title bout seems inevitable. |
| Texas | (0) A close less to Texas Tech and a good win over Kansas State keep the Longhorns in the top five. They have yet to play a "bad" game. |
| Michigan | (+4) Don't let a big loss at Minnesota distract you from Michigan's 23-point win over Wisconsin last Tuesday. The Wolverines are legit. |
| Iowa | (0) Iowa now has four Quad I wins in a row after Sunday's win at Northwestern. They still have yet to score fewer than 70 points in a game. |
| Tennessee | (+3) Tennessee continues to roll with a 20-point win over Vanderbilt. Not a huge addition to the résumé, but it keeps the momentum rolling. |
| Villanova | (-3) It's getting harder to keep Nova highly ranked when they haven't played in a month. Let's hope Tuesday's game vs. Seton Hall happens. |
| Houston | (+3) A one-point loss to Tulsa is what's keeping Houston out of the top five. The Cougars are back in business with four straight wins. |
| Kansas | (-3) No opportunities last week for Kansas to rectify a loss at Oklahoma State, so they drop three spots. Massive one at Baylor on Monday. |
| Alabama | (+9) Last week, I said Alabama was HOT. This week, they are BURNING. Six straight SEC wins with total dominations of Kentucky and Arkansas. |
| Creighton | (-4) Creighton may have been hosed on a missed call in the Butler loss, but they shouldn't have been in that situation against a 3-7 team. |
| Ohio State | (+8) Winning at Rutgers and at Illinois in the span of a week is an extremely impressive feat. There's a Northwestern win in there too. |
| Wisconsin | (-3) A nice win at the always-difficult-to-win-at RAC offsets some of the damage from the disaster loss to Michigan. Not all of it, though. |
| UConn | (+2) Good win at DePaul to reach 7-1 and 4-1 in conference. Terrible shame that the ranked matchup against Villanova had to be called off. |
| Texas Tech | (0) Tech reclaims the title of best four-loss team. OK results last week with a great upset win over Texas but also a close loss to Baylor. |
| St. Louis | (-3) Similar situation to Villanova: It's hard to warrant keeping Saint Louis ranked so highly when they haven't played in nearly a month. |
| Oregon | (0) No action last week keeps Oregon in the same place. The Ducks are no sure thing to win the Pac-12 with UCLA, USC and Colorado around. |
| UCLA | (0) I would buy the argument that UCLA is actually the top team in the Pac-12 right now, though a close call vs. Washington has me cautious. |
| Virginia | (NEW) At last, the long-awaited return of UVA to my rankings! Hard to argue against the last three games, outscoring ACC opponents 226-167. |
| Minnesota | (NEW) The Gophers may have four losses, including three since Dec. 31, but how do you leave out a team that plays like Gonzaga when at home? |
| Missouri | (0) A very solid win over Texas A&M keeps the Tigers in place. Would have moved up if not for the performances from Virginia and Minnesota. |
| Virginia Tech | (0) It's an odd season when you beat Duke and don't move up. But that win is only Quad 3 at the moment, and UVA and Minny impressed more. |
| Oklahoma State | (NEW) Wins over Kansas and Texas Tech mean Oklahoma State has to be ranked, even with losses to TCU and a blown 19-point lead to WVU. |
| Clemson | (-12) A 35-point loss to Virginia is atrocious and deserves a drop, but a 9-2 record with seven Quad I & II wins should keep Clemson ranked. |
| Louisville | (0) I want to rank Colorado higher, but the top 25 is so loaded that Louisville fell out. Next 5: Louisville, USC, LSU, West Virginia, Drake |
