Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Gonzaga | (0) Do I even need to say anything? Gonzaga is now 15-0 after a casual 46-point win over Pacific on Saturday. Just 10 more until perfection. |
| Baylor | (0) Baylor's path to perfection is trickier, as the meat of the Big 12 remains on the schedule. But the Bears have aced every test so far. |
| Michigan | (+1) Good wins over Maryland and Purdue help wipe away the Minnesota loss. Unfortunate that Michigan now goes on program pause due to COVID. |
| Texas | (-1) No games last week for Texas, but some big ones coming up with Oklahoma and Kentucky. Then, it's all sights on Texas-Baylor on Feb. 2. |
| Alabama | (+5) Alabama is cutting through the SEC like a hot knife through butter. If not for some early losses, the Tide could be in the top three. |
| Villanova | (+1) Yay! Villanova is finally playing again. And they're doing what they do best: beating Big East opponents. 2-0 since the return to play. |
| Houston | (+1) Houston has been just as hot as Alabama, albeit against worse opponents. The Cougars have won the last four by an average of 21 points. |
| Iowa | (-3) A 12-point home loss to Indiana raises serious questions about the defense, but as long as Garza is around, Iowa is still a top team. |
| Missouri | (+12) The Tigers are for real! Beat South Carolina and avenged an earlier loss to Tennessee. Mark Feb. 6 on your calendar: Mizzou vs. Bama. |
| Ohio State | (+2) Massive win for the Buckeyes in Madison moves them up two spots. Would have moved up even more if not for the Purdue loss on Tuesday. |
| Florida State | (NEW) From unranked to just outside the top 10. That's because of a massive week with wins over Louisville and Clemson. The Noles are back. |
| Virginia | (+7) Virginia and Florida State are the cream of the crop in the ACC at the moment, despite the earlier struggles each team went through. |
| Creighton | (-2) Much-needed win over UConn stops a losing streak, but the prior home loss to Providence did occur Wednesday, so Creighton drops a bit. |
| Texas Tech | (+1) Like Texas, no games over the past week for the Red Raiders. But they'll have their hands full this week with both WVU and LSU on tap. |
| Wisconsin | (-2) Rather strange home loss to Ohio State considering how well the Badgers were just three days prior. That's Big Ten basketball, baby! |
| Tennessee | (-10) Um, what the hell happened to Tennessee? The class of the SEC has dropped two straight, and neither loss was particularly pretty. |
| St. Louis | (-1) Please, please, please let Tuesday's game against Dayton be played. Saint Louis has been a corpse floating in my top 25 for a month. |
| West Virginia | (NEW) WVU returns to play with a solid win over Kansas State, but this jump is more about other top 25 teams losing than WVU winning. |
| Drake | (NEW) Eh, why not? The top 25 is an absolute mess. Let's give some love to the best of the undefeated teams not named Gonzaga or Baylor. |
| UCLA | (-2) An OT loss to Stanford drops UCLA a couple spots, but that's not an awful loss to have on the résumé. Still the leader in the Pac-12. |
| Kansas | (-12) Kansas' collapse is even bigger than Tennessee's, though it's come against better opponents. But three losses in a row is never good. |
| Boise State | (NEW) People should take note of the Broncos. Class of the Mountain West, now on a winning streak of 13 games with a 9-0 conference record. |
| Illinois | (NEW) Does a five-loss Illinois team deserve to get back into the rankings after just beating Penn State? Maybe, maybe not. Tough week. |
| Oregon | (-7) Oregon's loss to Oregon State is a lot less defensible than UCLA's loss to Stanford, especially at home. That's a big Q3 résumé stain. |
| Oklahoma State | (-2) Hard to punish Oklahoma State for a good loss to Baylor. Next 7: UConn, Xavier, Minnesota, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma, USC, Winthrop |
