Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Gonzaga | (0) Eight. Only eight regular season games stand between Gonzaga and perfection. It's looking more and more likely with each passing day. |
| Baylor | (0) Baylor also remains perfect, but as mentioned last week, their path to perfection is far more difficult than Gonzaga's. Texas up next. |
| Michigan | (0) No games for Michigan last week with the COVID pause. If all goes well, the Wolverines return to action Thursday, Feb. 11 vs. Illinois. |
| Houston | (+3) Houston continues its reign of terror in the American, knocking out Tulane and tournament hopeful SMU by a combined 45 points. Ya woo. |
| Villanova | (+1) More of the same for Villanova with a big win at Seton Hall this week. The Wildcats appear to be one of the most complete teams in CBB. |
| Alabama | (-1) Alabama's 10-game winning streak may be over, but the Crimson Tide are still undefeated in the SEC and have a borderline 1-seed résumé. |
| Texas | (-3) Two losses in the last three games is just a product of the strength of the Big 12, not an indication of the direction Texas is headed. |
| Ohio State | (+2) One of the hottest teams in hoops with six wins in their last seven games. But the grind don't stop: A big win at Iowa on Thursday. |
| Oklahoma | (NEW) Speaking of hot... Oklahoma is absolutely scorching: five straight wins, the last three all over top-10 opponents. Texas Tech is next. |
| Creighton | (+3) It's hard to rank teams when nearly every one in the 8-18 range lost a game last week! Creighton didn't, so they move up a few spots. |
| Iowa | (-3) Back-to-back losses for Iowa, who drops out of my top 10 and six spots in the past two weeks. Chance to rebound vs. OSU on Thursday. |
| Tennessee | (+4) Tennessee emphatically stops a losing skid with a 19-point win over Kansas. Vols are back on track as one of the SEC's elite teams. |
| Illinois | (+10) Illinois is elite once again! It took a home win over Iowa to do it, but Ayo Dosunmu and co. are back in the B1G title conversation. |
| Missouri | (-5) Not a great week for Mizzou: a loss to Auburn and what would have been a loss to TCU if not for a crazy comeback. This drop seems fair. |
| Texas Tech | (-1) Similar to Mizzou: a loss to WVU and what would have been a loss to LSU if not for a crazy comeback. Better opponents, so smaller drop. |
| Florida State | (-5) Florida State backs up its return to the top 25 with... a loss to Georgia Tech. GT isn't terrible, but it's still a bad look for FSU. |
| Virginia | (-5) Similar situation for UVA. The Cavaliers just laid down and died in the final 10 minutes against VT. Bad week for the ACC's best. |
| Virginia Tech | (NEW) VT has had its ups and downs, but mostly ups, including the win over Virginia on Saturday. The tournament résumé is coming together. |
| Florida | (NEW) Florida has been hot, although a lot more quietly than other teams. They have wins over Tennessee and WVU in the past two weeks. |
| West Virginia | (-2) Huge win over TTU immediately erased by a loss to Florida. The win is worth more than the loss on the résumé, but not in the rankings. |
| UCLA | (-1) Cronin's Bruins narrowly avoided an upset from noted Pac-12 troublemaker Oregon State to reach 13-3 overall and 9-1 in conference play. |
| Drake | (-3) That win over Illinois State on Sunday was wayyyyy too close for comfort. But the Bulldogs got the job done and remained undefeated. |
| Oklahoma State | (+2) OSU's résumé received a nice with a win over Arkansas in the Big 12-SEC Challenge. Six Big 12 teams in my top 25, none named Kansas. |
| Purdue | (NEW) Purdue may have lost to Michigan by 17 recently, but look at these: 19-point win over Minnesota, sweep of OSU, seven Quad 1/2 wins. |
| Wisconsin | (-10) Two losses in three games. Bleh! Next 9: USC, Xavier, UConn, Boise State, San Diego State, Oregon, BYU, Loyola-Chi, St. Bonaventure |
