Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Baylor | NOTE: After week 5 I scrap my ballot and re-rank from scratch going into conference season. So not including change from last week. |
| Arizona | They look great. @Illinois was just the cherry on top. |
| Duke | Play more games! |
| Gonzaga | This feels high. But they have a pair of wins that's matched by Duke, Purdue... and maybe Ohio State? And great metrics. |
| Purdue | I considered keeping them at #1 before the State game. But that's back-to-back stinkers, and this team has serious questions. |
| UCLA | Landed higher on UCLA than I expected. They've looked fine, even without Cody Riley. |
| Kansas | A rare lack of top end non-conference games for Kansas has made it hard to judge this team. Aside from knowing they're really good. |
| Michigan State | This feels insane. But they've beaten 3 good teams (Minn, Loyola, UConn), 2 more okay teams (Butler, LVille) and lost to very good teams. |
| Ohio State | Two great wins at home, two excusable losses away from home. But playing great basketball right now. |
| Alabama | One very bad loss, two good wins. Needs to be a lot more consistent, but has a top 5 ceiling. |
| Villanova | The Syracuse game was ugly, ugly basketball. But they won. The Baylor game was also ugly, and they lost. |
| Iowa State | No top-top tier win. But four okay ones (Xavier, Memphis, Creighton, Iowa) and no losses. |
| USC | No really great wins, no losses, dominant play against most teams. Needs to shoot FTs for the next month. |
| Houston | Great metrics & scheduled a good non-conference slate in principle, then ended up with their best win being vs. Butler. Oof. |
| Wisconsin | I'm sure I'll get torched for this because of the Ohio State loss, but it's the only blemish on their record with Johnny Davis. |
| Auburn | Bit of a soft set of games so far (minus Loyola), but clearly a very very good team. |
| LSU | Similar to Auburn, but with a worse schedule but no losses. Hard to split these two teams. |
| Seton Hall | Two wins that felt a lot better when they happened, but that are still decent. And one very excusable loss. |
| Colorado State | Should've already been ranked. Three solid wins, no losses, top 5 backcourt in the country. |
| Xavier | Freemantle is back, already have three good wins, nothing here points to them being reasonably unranked. |
| Tennessee | That loss to Texas Tech was ugly, ugly, ugly basketball. |
| UConn | Very banged up, still clearly a good team. Nice win over the Bonnies. |
| Kentucky | There's a real argument for Kentucky to be unranked. But the eye test says it'd be wrong. |
| Texas | Same as Kentucky. Beaten cupcakes, lost reasonable games to good teams. Looks okay in reality. |
| Texas Tech | Almost Ins: San Francisco, Texas Tech, Arkansas, Illinois, Loyola, UNC, Saint Mary's, Minnesota, Loyola. |
