Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Villanova | Number 1 last week, didn't lose, therefore number 1 this week. A close game against Notre Dame show the mental toughness of this team. |
| Kansas | Since their opening day loss to Indiana in overtime, this team has looked unbeatable. |
| Duke | A good win over ranked Florida and a lopsided win over UNLV, this looks like it could be one of Coach K's best teams. |
| UCLA | Lonzo Ball is becoming a star before our very eyes. He leads all D1 basketball in assists and just in general makes those around him better. |
| Kentucky | I'm not completely sold on this years Kentucky team being as good as previous years. 2 good tests against UNC and AT Louisville incoming. |
| Baylor | If this feels low for Baylor, it's because it is. In general you could switch around this top 7 and I'd be okay with it. Very close. |
| Gonzaga | Rounding out the aforementioned top 7 is Gonzaga. They can move higher if they stay undefeated, but their SOS is mostly downhill from here. |
| North Carolina | This is where I would start my "2nd tier". UNC has looked good this year, and an upcoming matchup with Kentucky will tell us a lot. |
| Creighton | Creighton has a true big man in Justin Patton that could be a real game changer. I look forward to watching him progress. |
| Indiana | Indiana has 1 major hiccup this year with a loss to Fort Wayne, but also beat the 3rd ranked team twice. A good test in Butler this week. |
| Louisville | Their only loss is to a Baylor team that most people underestimated, and it was only by 3 points. I can't wait until Kentucky comes to town. |
| South Carolina | Star guard Sindarius Thornwell was suspended indefinitely on Saturday, so this ranking may only be temporary. |
| West Virginia | In my 1st attempt at a ballot last week I ranked WV at 22...after reflection and more research I believe that ranking was much to low. |
| Virginia | This Virginia team is good...but I've yet to see anything that screams "great". They'll get their chance when the ACC schedule starts. |
| Wisconsin | This is not your father's badgers...They are explosive and can score points in bunches, unlike the slow and steady Bo Ryan badgers of old. |
| Purdue | This is a live/die bye the 3 team. When they're on that have a shot at beating anybody, when they're not, they could lose to anybody. |
| Arizona | Arizona looked good in it's win over Missouri, and hasn't looked that bad all season. Could be a surprise team come end of the year. |
| Butler | Butler loses to a not that good Indiana State team, then beats a decent Cincinnati team. Those Scott brothers have a taste for upsets. |
| Notre Dame | Notre Dame lead for most of the game against a VERY good Villanova team, and while they didn't win, they proved they can hang. |
| Xavier | The loss to Baylor was not that surprising, but a loss to Colorado puts the previously 7-0 Musketeers at a mediocre 8-2. |
| Oregon | The Pac-12 may be better than people were giving it credit for...or it may be early season luck. Only time will tell. |
| USC | USC is still undefeated, and while their competition has been less than elite, it's still an accomplishment to this point. |
| Florida State | FSU has looked good this year, averaging over 90 ppg. A big win over Florida gets them into this weeks top 25. |
| Virginia Tech | This team has not faced elite competition yet, but has done pretty well against the power conference competition it has faced. |
| Saint Mary's | A 14-point lost to a team that has never before beaten a top 25 ranked school is about as bad a loss as you can get. |
