Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Villanova | Mauled Georgetown and Connecticut on the road. The most complete team in the nation. |
| Purdue | Blew past Wisconsin and Iowa in games where the score somehow was closer than it appeared. Scary team. |
| Virginia | Handled GT and Wake by double figures on the road. Duke on Saturday looms very large. |
| Duke | Duke's largest weakness, 3-point shooting, didn't look so weak last week. Competition stiffens up this weekend. |
| Kansas | In a week with much carnage, Rock Chalk survived and thrived. Kansas at the top of the Big XII again. |
| West Virginia | Responded to the blown double-digit lead against Kansas by mutilating Texas. Werewolves of Morgantown. |
| Michigan State | Pretty safe to assume that the slump is over after that domination of Indiana. P.S., please start using Bridges correctly. |
| Xavier | Very nice win on the road against Seton Hall. Having difficulty getting a good read on this team. |
| Cincinnati | Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, especially against the dredges of the conference. |
| North Carolina | Ran its record to 0-infinity at home against Clemson. Quietly has 4 straight ACC wins. |
| Arizona | Held serve this week, though a little close for comfort against Stanford. Hardest team for me to figure out. |
| Oklahoma | Bad week. Trae Young is special, but not 39-shots-special. I wonder how "together" that locker room is. |
| Texas Tech | Even worse week. Losing at Texas is excusable. Getting drilled at Iowa State is not. |
| Ohio State | All their losses are quality, and they're ripping through the Big XIV like a tornado. Impressive team. |
| Auburn | Hard to punish them too severely with a loss on the road at Alabama, particularly when the Top 25 was a mess this week. |
| Wichita State | Not the week you'd want to have when trying to juxtapose your Top 10 ranking with metrics in the 20s. Seems like a fair balance here. |
| Arizona State | Can't keep trading wins and losses with the Pac-12 already as weak as it is. Stopped the slide against Cal. |
| Saint Mary's | Next to Purdue, nation's longest winning streak. Huge upset at Gonzaga, then avoided the letdown against Pacific. |
| Gonzaga | Fortunately, even a home loss to St. Mary's is excusable. Unfortunately, metrics (KenPom: 7) don't jive with RPI (56). |
| URI | The class of the jumbled A10 this season. Just 3 losses, only one of which (Virginia at a neutral site) was ugly. |
| Michigan | Would have probably flown up into the mid-teens without the bizarre loss at Nebraska. Still a quality team. |
| Nevada | The class of a secretly underrated Mountain West. Will certainly be under-seeded in March. |
| Tennessee | The defense showed up this week, unlike previous weeks. Unfortunately, the offense didn't at Missouri. |
| Clemson | Somewhat of a wonky rating with the loss of Grantham. Hate to see a fantastic kid's college career end that way. |
| Miami (FL) | Painful missed opportunity against Duke, but did salvage a road win at a game Wolfpack squad. |
